The issuer behind the guarantee.
An annuity guarantee is a promise from one company, sometimes lasting forty years. The product matters less than the balance sheet standing behind it.

Schwab's financial strength is not what backs your annuity
Charles Schwab is a brokerage. It does not issue annuity contracts. When you buy an annuity through Schwab, the contract is issued by a separate insurance company, and every guarantee in it depends on that company's claims-paying ability. Schwab's size, ratings, and balance sheet are irrelevant to whether your annuity payments arrive in 2050. Find the issuing carrier named on your paperwork and evaluate that company.
Three things to understand about Schwab.
The distribution model does deliver a real cost advantage
Schwab has built its annuity offering around low-cost, no-commission contracts, and that is a genuine structural benefit. Without a commission to recover, there is less pressure toward long surrender schedules. This is the legitimate reason to look at buying this way.
Do your ratings check on the issuer, every time
The habit to build: read the contract for the issuing entity's legal name, then look that entity up at AM Best and confirm your state guaranty association limit for it. The brand on the website is not the entity on the hook. This applies to every marketplace, not only Schwab.
A narrow shelf is a trade-off in both directions
A curated lineup means less chance of being sold something inappropriate, and also less chance the best available contract for your situation is on the shelf. If a specific guarantee matters to you, check whether any carrier offers it before concluding the category cannot.
How to read any carrier.
Palm Wealth Capital publishes independent annuity research and education. No carrier pays for placement on this site. Nothing here is individualized investment, tax, or legal advice, and no page on this site is a recommendation to buy or avoid any contract. Annuity guarantees rely on the financial strength and claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.
Holding a Charles Schwab contract — or being shown one?
Send the illustration or statement. We will check Charles Schwab’s current AM Best rating and outlook against the date on this page, read the surrender schedule and any market value adjustment, price the riders, and tell you what the guaranteed terms are rather than the illustrated ones. If the answer is that you don’t need it, that is the answer you get — there is nothing here for us to sell you.
