National Life / LSW annuity review.

Most searches for LSW are really one question — who is the company on my paperwork? Answer: the issuing arm of National Life Group, A+ rated, mutual-structured, and the biggest name in teacher-plan indexed annuities.

Financial Strength

The issuer behind the guarantee.

An annuity guarantee is a promise from one company, sometimes lasting forty years. The product matters less than the balance sheet standing behind it.

LSW, National Life, NLV Financial — one group, and which name is on your contract matters

National Life Group is a brand, not an insurance company. The entities that issue contracts are National Life Insurance Company — chartered in Vermont in 1848 and licensed in all 50 states — and Life Insurance Company of the Southwest (LSW), the Texas subsidiary that issues most annuity contracts outside New York. Both carry the A+ (Superior) AM Best rating affirmed in August 2026, under the NLV Financial mutual holding structure with no outside shareholders. Your guarantee, and your state guaranty association coverage, attach to whichever entity issued your contract — check the first page of the policy, not the brochure. One neutral note for the file: in 2024 LSW reinsured a roughly $4.9 billion seasoned block of MYGA and FIA business to 26North Re, a private-equity-backed reinsurer; reinsurance moves risk between insurers, and your contractual relationship remains with LSW.

Before You Buy

Three things to understand about National Life.

The 403(b) dominance is the group's real story

National Life is the largest seller of fixed indexed annuities inside employer-sponsored plans — the 403(b) and 457 market serving teachers and public employees — per LIMRA rankings. If an FIA appears on your school district's vendor list, there is a fair chance it is theirs. That reach cuts both ways: the products are built for payroll contributions, and the same scrutiny our 403(b) guide applies to every plan-menu annuity applies here — fees, surrender terms, and index crediting all still need reading.

A+ with rate-table presence is an uncommon combination

Most carriers near the top of MYGA rate tables sit in the A- and B++ tiers; National Life regularly appears competitive while holding a Superior rating and a Comdex around 90. For a buyer who wants strong crediting without dropping below the A band, this group belongs on the quote list — with the usual insistence on the guaranteed minimums behind any indexed contract's current caps.

Living benefits language deserves translation

The group markets living benefits heavily — on life policies that means accelerated death benefits for illness; on annuities it generally means income riders. The phrase is doing marketing work across two different product families. Ask which contractual rider is actually being described, what it costs annually, and what the guaranteed rather than current terms are.

Background

How to read any carrier.

Palm Wealth Capital publishes independent annuity research and education. No carrier pays for placement on this site. Nothing here is individualized investment, tax, or legal advice, and no page on this site is a recommendation to buy or avoid any contract. Annuity guarantees rely on the financial strength and claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.

Holding a National Life / LSW contract — or being shown one?

Send the illustration or statement. We will check National Life / LSW’s current AM Best rating and outlook against the date on this page, read the surrender schedule and any market value adjustment, price the riders, and tell you what the guaranteed terms are rather than the illustrated ones. If the answer is that you don’t need it, that is the answer you get — there is nothing here for us to sell you.
